Singapore Telecommunications’ Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn’t matter much if the payments can’t be sustained. Before making this announcement, the company’s dividend was much higher than its earnings. This situation certainly isn’t ideal, and could place significant strain on the balance sheet if it continues.
Analysts expect a massive rise in earnings per share in the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate that the payout ratio could reach 63%, which is in a comfortable range for us.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn’t look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was SGD0.168 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SGD0.15. The dividend has shrunk at around 1.1% a year during that period. Generally, we don’t like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders’ returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, it’s even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Singapore Telecommunications’ EPS has fallen by approximately 24% per year during the past five years. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn’t be feeling too comfortable.
We’re Not Big Fans Of Singapore Telecommunications’ Dividend
In summary, investors will like to be receiving a higher dividend, but we have some questions about whether it can be sustained over the long term. The company isn’t making enough to be paying as much as it is, and the other factors don’t look particularly promising either. Considering all of these factors, we wouldn’t rely on this dividend if we wanted to live on the income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
