Spring Bots Aim to Have Robotics Recognised as a Sport in South Africa
The Spring Bots have an admirable goal in mind, to have Robotics recognised as an official sport in South Africa.
South Africa (23 May 2024) – Team Spring Bots South Africa is taking robotics to the future youth! The robotics team was established in 2018 and now represents SA on the international stage of all things STEM.
The team’s core mission is to provide equal access to education, skills, and knowledge centred on STEM—the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Their latest goal is to have robotics officially recognised as a sport in South Africa!
“We are currently campaigning to have robotics recognised as an official sport in South Africa, and we need the nation’s help to achieve this goal. We are spearheading a campaign to have robotics declared as an official sport in South Africa, and we are seeking the support of esteemed companies, schools, and businesses as well as individuals to achieve this goal.
Robotics is not only a rapidly growing field but also an educational and engaging activity that combines elements of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
Declaring robotics as a sport will:
- Encourage broader participation in STEM fields.
- Foster innovation and critical thinking among young people.
- Provide new opportunities for students to engage in team-based, competitive activities.
- Promote inclusivity and equal opportunities in education and sports.
“Globally, only two countries have declared robotics as a sport. We believe South Africa can be the third, setting a precedent for innovation and forward-thinking in education and extracurricular activities. This initiative is part of a global campaign led by FIRST Global, and we are committed to doing our part.
In addition to advocating for the recognition of robotics as a sport, we are also working on establishing 100 new robotics teams across South Africa within the next year. To accomplish this ambitious goal, we need the support and commitment of our community”
