Stack Overflow Fully Embraces Generative AI With OpenAI Partnership
Programming discussion and answer forum Stack Overflow have agreed to partner up and improve OpenAI’s generative AI models for writing and editing code with Stack Overflow’s data. OpenAI will help Stack Overflow with its Overflow AI set of generative AI features while its validated technical data will become part of ChatGPT’s resources, including proper attribution to the Stack Overflow community, which the company hopes will foster a deeper engagement and recognition of the contributors. It’s a long way from the early outright ban on ChatGPT-composed answers for Stack Overflow back at the end of 2022.

“Learning from as many languages, cultures, subjects, and industries as possible ensures that our models can serve everyone,” OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap said. The developer community is particularly important to both of us. Our deep partnership with Stack Overflow will help us enhance the user and developer experience on both our platforms.”
The deal will allow OpenAI to provide its users with direct access to trusted, high-quality technical knowledge and code that the vast Stack Overflow community has contributed over the past 15 years. Stack Overflow, in turn, will utilize OpenAI’s models to develop OverflowAI. OverflowAI combines a mix of new and updated features for both the public and enterprise sides of the platform. The consumer-facing platform includes conversational search with generative AI, including citations for the responses; Stack Overflow for Teams users get a more advanced version of the AI search tool, drawing its answers from GitHub and other trusted sources in addition to Stack Overflow.
“Stack Overflow is the world’s largest developer community, with more than 59 million questions and answers. Through this industry-leading partnership with OpenAI, we strive to redefine the developer experience, fostering efficiency and collaboration through the power of community, best-in-class data, and AI experiences,” Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar explained. “Our goal with OverflowAPI, and our work to advance the era of socially responsible AI, is to set new standards with vetted, trusted, and accurate data that will be the foundation on which technology solutions are built and delivered to our user.”
Linking with OpenAI will allow Stack Overflow users to draw on insights from both Stack Overflow’s data repository and OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI technologies to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the AI models. This symbiotic relationship is expected to drive innovation and improve the products offered by both organizations, ultimately benefiting the global tech community. The initial set of integrations and capabilities resulting from this partnership will be available in the first half of 2024.
