State’s major electric vehicle commitment, UK PM Rishi Sunak plans to bring back National Service: Australia news live

First up we start with a major electric vehicle commitment from the NSW government. Sixteen councils will see close to 700 charging ports installed as the EV revolution rolls on. Read more in the blog below.

Australia has reiterated its commitment to help Papua New Guinea after more than 600 people are feared dead following a landslide last Friday. “This is an absolute tragedy,” Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles told ABC RN.

There is also plenty of talk about UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s plan to bring back National Service. More details below.

  • UK PM vows to bring back National Service

    UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has raised eyebrows with an early election promise – vowing to bring back National Service for British teens.

    He said this would entail either a year on a military placement or spending one weekend of each month volunteering for 18-year-olds.

    The Royal Family would not be exempt from the scheme.

  • Major electric vehicle change coming to state’s roads

    Whether you like it or not, electric vehicles are here to stay and NSW has made a major commitment to ensure a smooth rollout across the state.

    Climate Change and Energy Minister Penny Sharpe on Sunday unveiled the first recipients of the government’s EV kerbside charging grants, announcing 671 charge ports would be installed at 391 sites across 16 local government areas.

    Councils to benefit from the increased number of chargers are:

    • Blacktown

    • Burwood

    • City of Sydney

    • Georges River

    • Inner West

    • Ku-ring-gai

    • Lane Cove

    • Liverpool

    • Mosman

    • Newcastle

    • North Sydney

    • Northern Beaches

    • Randwick

    • Waverley

    • Willoughby

    • Woollahra
