Tableau and Databricks Expand Strategic Partnership
May 2, 2024 – At the Tableau Conference 2024, Tableau and Databricks announced significant updates to their strategic partnership with the introduction of a new Tableau Delta Sharing connector and the “Explore in Tableau” feature. These developments aim to enhance the ease of sharing, connecting to, and visualizing data, thereby enabling more seamless and secure data interactions.
The Delta Sharing connector, developed in collaboration with the Linux Foundation, represents an open and secure method of data sharing. Over the past year, both companies have worked together to integrate this technology into Tableau, fostering a spirit of collaboration. This integration facilitates real-time data sharing between Tableau and Databricks, enhancing the ability of teams to collaborate and make decisions based on the most current data.
This connector’s value lies in its ability to simplify data sharing and collaboration, enabling teams to work together more efficiently and effectively.
Tableau Delta Sharing Connector Highlights:
- Provides a powerful solution for sharing data between internal business units
- Enables collaboration with external partners and customers
- Shares live data across platforms, eliminating the need for replication
- Improves data governance with centralized access management
The connector utilizes Delta Lake, an open-source storage layer built on existing data lake systems like Azure Data Lake Storage and Amazon S3. Delta Lake enhances data integrity and simplifies data pipelines through features such as ACID transactions, schema enforcement, and optimized data management. It is now fully integrated with Tableau’s data management features, including Tableau Prep, Tableau Catalog, and Tableau Server, providing comprehensive data management and analytics solutions.
The Tableau Delta Sharing connector is now available on the Tableau Exchange.
Explore in Tableau
Aiming to simplify data analysis, the new “Explore in Tableau” feature allows users to connect to data with a single click, fostering quicker insights. This feature is designed to integrate data insights more directly into user experiences, addressing challenges commonly faced by IT organizations. The “Explore in Tableau” function enables users to stay within their workflow in the browser, enhancing productivity and data governance. A pilot program for this feature will launch in the coming months, with general availability to follow shortly.
Additionally, enhancements to the Databricks SQL connector include support for advanced authentication modes, OAuth, and the option to bring your own identity provider. These updates have resulted in a performance improvement of 20%.
