Texas using artificial intelligence to grade STAAR exam

The Texas Education Agency said that while the process has changed, the quality of scoring remains the same.

HOUSTON — Changes are coming to the way STAAR tests are graded in the state of Texas.

In 2023, the Texas Education Agency announced they would use Artificial Intelligence, or AI, to grade the essay portion of the exam.

The TEA said AI will grade 75% of the written portion of the exam, meanwhile, humans will still grade 25%.

The AI system is also supposed to flag anything it’s unsure about so humans will also be able to review those answers.

The new move has made many educators nervous because they believe standardized tests are so important for students and school districts. Many critics are questioning the accuracy of AI grading and are wondering what prompted this hybrid scoring in the first place.

The TEA said that while the process has changed, the quality of scoring remains the same.

The agency said that 25% of the STAAR test is still scored by highly trained and highly qualified humans.
