The Fastest Dual-Motor Electric Car In 2024

To get the best acceleration and lap time results, electric car manufacturers are heavily investing in independent-wheel drive systems, featuring one motor on each wheel. We see this in cars like the Aspark Owl, Rimac Nevera, and Pininfarina Battista. There are also some incredible EV sedans and coupes that achieve hypercar-rivaling acceleration times thanks to their triple-motor all-wheel drive systems. A good few electric cars stand out for producing impressive results using only two electric motors, but only one car stands out as a segment leader.

With electric drive and battery technology being the primary frontier for most mainstream manufacturers, it’s not surprising to see established brands achieve new power output and acceleration records with each passing year. The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is the star of 2024 and 2025, thanks to its innovative dual-motor system that challenges the likes of the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air Sapphire’s over 1,000-horsepower outputs and sub-2.0-second 0-60 MPH times. It achieves this using only a pair of electric motors.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Porsche’s websites and other authoritative sources, including the EPA, Consumer Reports, and J.D. Power.

2024 Porsche Taycan: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

The Porsche Taycan continues its campaign as a desirable performance EV sedan in 2024, and here’s what you need to know about it.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Boasts A Top Speed Of 180 MPH

It Does 0-60 MPH In 2.1 Seconds

Porsche developed Taycan Turbo GT to get the blood pumping with its new-generation dual AC-synchronous electric motor technology. The performance EV sedan generated 777 horsepower and 988 pound-feet, but if you activate the launch control system, this temporarily increases to a whopping 1,019-horsepower output. This is an incredibly impressive result considering its main rivals need three electric motors to produce similar outputs. In standard guise, this system is enough to get the fastback EV sedan from 0-60 MPH in an astonishing 2.2 seconds.

Specifying the optional Weissach package doesn’t increase power outputs, but it reduces the curb weight by 137 pounds, which reduces the acceleration time by 0.1 seconds. Porsche limits the top speed of both derivatives to 180 MPH. The EV also features a slightly revised variation of the two-speed direct-drive transmission system applied to all Taycan derivatives.

Through the genius of electrification, the Turbo GT becomes the most powerful street-legal car to grace the Porsche brand. It is working on an all-electric 918 successor, so we can expect this record to change fairly soon. This is technically a 2025 model, so EPA energy consumption estimates are still pending. For reference, the flagship Turbo S derivative returns 75 MPGe on the combined cycle, or 45 kWh per 100 miles.

Porsche draws back to its philosophy of emphasizing tight packaging and lower weight figures, which gives it a stronger edge in the EV performance sedan market. We know that the Air Sapphire and Model S Plaid may perform better in a straight line, but we’re likely to see a very different story on the racetrack. The most impressive result is undoubtedly its 7:07:55 time at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. However, some might argue that its 1:27:87 record at Laguna Seca was even more of an achievement, as this is the fastest recorded time on the challenging circuit for an all-electric road car.

Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Lap Records

  • The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT set a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record of 7 minutes 33 seconds in 2023, making it the fastest production electric vehicle.
  • It beat the previous Nürburgring record held by the Tesla Model S Plaid by three seconds.
  • During this record-setting lap, it achieved a top speed of 161 MPH down the back Dottinger straight.
  • At Laguna Seca, the Taycan Turbo GT recorded a lap time of one minute 27.87 seconds.
  • This time surpasses the previous Laguna Seca record for production electric vehicles set by the Tesla Model S Plaid by 0.8 seconds.

Obviously, these times are thanks to Porsche’s access to some of the best time attack and racing drivers available, but a big part of its success is the brand’s new Attack Mode function. This increases the system’s output by another 160 horsepower for 10 seconds. The catch is that you can only use this if the 105 kWh lithium-ion battery pack has more than 30-percent battery capacity and a battery temperature greater than 50°F. Attack Mode works best in lower temperatures in the system’s Sport and Sport Plus driving modes.

With the Weissach package applied, the Turbo GT inherits an upgraded pulse inverter, specific aerodynamic parts, the aforementioned Attack Mode system, and the optional Porsche Active Ride system. With this, the suspension benefits from an intuitive set of active dampers that constantly adjust to the different surfaces and cornering conditions to optimize the car’s stability.

The Weissach Package also reduces the curb weight by 137 pounds by adding new aluminum and carbon fiber parts, which replace conventional steel components. Within the Turbo GT’s already well appointed cabin, the Weissach Package adds exclusive Alcantara upholstery with contrasting stitching, a multifunction sport steering wheel, and unique Weissach badging.

For the Taycan to even get a Weissach package, Porsche must see it as a very important and track oriented model, as these are typically reserved for its top-of-the-line GT models. Porsche’s Weissach history traces back to its renowned development center in Weissach, Germany, established in 1971. This facility has driven innovation in motorsport and high-performance road cars.

Porsche introduced the Weissach package to bring race-inspired enhancements to its performance models, blending advanced materials and aerodynamics. The Weissach package symbolizes cutting-edge technology and performance, allowing enthusiasts to experience a closer connection to Porsche’s storied motorsport legacy. Dan Gurney’s Genius Design

  • Dan Gurney, an American racing driver and team owner, invented the Gurney Flap in 1971.
  • The device consists of a small tab, typically around two percent of the wing’s chord length, attached to the trailing edge of an aerodynamic surface.
  • It increases downforce without significantly increasing drag, thereby improving vehicle stability and cornering performance.
  • Often used on racing cars and aircraft, the Gurney Flap enhances aerodynamic efficiency.
  • This simple and cost-effective modification has been widely adopted in motorsport and aerospace engineering.
  • It provides a practical solution for fine-tuning aerodynamic balance and optimizing performance.

The Taycan Turbo GT introduces front- and rear-splitter aeroblades together with a gurney flap located on the chic rear wing. Dan Gurney invented this aerodynamic feature for his 1971 Formula One car, but it remains a crucial feature for today’s performance models, albeit with some modern revisions. The Gurney Flap intends to keep the Turbo GT planted to the surface by increasing downforce and reducing drag. Considering the Taycan Turbo GT maxes out at 180 MPH, this feature massively benefits the performance sedan at all moments during high-speed track sessions.
