The three telecommunication companies are expected to compete in bidding for Korea Electric Power Corporation’s 1 million IoT lines.

According to the telecommunications industry on the 11th, all three telecommunications companies are expected to jump into the LTE-based remote meter reading infrastructure (AMI) project ordered by KEPCO.

KEPCO is currently conducting a bidding announcement for the sixth project of low-pressure (home) remote meter reading infrastructure, and it is estimated that about 1 million units will be built this time.

The IoT line has the advantage of being able to secure a large number of IoT lines at once, although the average sales per subscriber (ARPU) is low compared to mobile phones, ranging from hundreds to thousands of won.

In addition, there is a possibility that the three telecommunications companies, which are focusing on B2B (B2B) businesses, will be linked to other B2B businesses in the future after winning orders.

Last year, LG U+ ranked second in terms of the number of subscriptions, beating KT, thanks to KEPCO’s order of about 2.5 million remote meter lines.

At that time, KT was lukewarm about winning orders for low-profit IoT lines, but KT is currently explaining that it is “considering participation,” so it is highly likely that KT will jump into this order.

SK Telecom and LG U+ are also expected to submit bids before the 30th of this month.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Science and ICT, SK Telecom topped the list with 22,952,612 mobile phone lines as of January, KT ranked second with 13,489,926, and LG Uplus ranked third with 10,931,993.

However, LG U+ ranks first in IoT communication with 7,155,839 units. SK Telecom has 6,981,266 and KT has 2,885,355.
