Tiffin summer camp teaching cybersecurity to high school students

The one-week camp will run from June 10-14 and teach ethical hacking fundamentals, social engineering techniques, countermeasures and network defense.

TIFFIN, Ohio — Instead of bonfires, hiking and bunk beds for summer camp, some high school students will learn how to fend off cyber attacks through one of the best cybersecurity programs in the country.

Tiffin University hosts a college-level cybersecurity boot camp every year to see if other students would be interested in the field. But now, the university has decided to host a summer camp version specifically for high school juniors and seniors.

“What we’re really training the students to do is not only be familiar with those networks and familiar with the cybersecurity practice, but understand what a malicious actor might want to do to take advantage of somebody in that space,” said Sean Glieberman, executive director of the Center for Cyber Defense at Tiffin University.

The one-week camp will run from June 10-14 and teach ethical hacking fundamentals, social engineering techniques, countermeasures and network defense.

“Hopefully along that ethical hacking track, they’ll have that step in the door. If they do become students here (at Tiffin University), they can carry on with the ethical hacking team, they can take part in the cyber center itself and they could actually go through the college-level cybersecurity boot camp as well,” Glieberman said.

After completing the camp, the student will have the proper credentials to pass an International Council of E-Commerce certification exam.

Glieberman hopes the camp can inspire high school students to join the next round of college students studying cybersecurity and eventually become professionals.

“Kids are really able to see a real-world operation,” he said. “It’s supposed to simulate an actual cyber operations center that once the kids graduate they would see in the real world.”
