Transformers’ Robosen Robotics Line Gets Its First Decepticon, Megatron

Highlights

  • Robosen and Hasbro have revealed a new addition to their range of auto-converting Transformers robots – Megatron.
  • Megatron is the first Decepticon to join the collection and can be bought for $899 during the presale period. It will be $1,199 after that period ends.
  • The robot Megatron has 270 unique voice lines recorded by Frank Welker, the original voice of the Decepticon in 1984.

Transformers introduced us to a level of tech we could only dream of in the 1980s because, well, Autobots and Decepticons are fictional beings from a faraway planet. While there sadly may never be a time when a sentient Optimus Prime walks among us, Hasbro and Robosen Robotics showed off the next best thing this week. A robotic Megatron that can transform from its bipedal form into a tank and back again whenever you command it to do so, joining a growing range of robotic Transformers and becoming the first Decepticon to join the line-up.

There are two ways to make your impressive new Megatron transform – either by using the robot’s companion app, or simply by telling it to. That’s right, an evil robotic Transformer that does exactly what you tell it to. Not the beginning of some villainous origin story, or at least I hope not, but a reality that can be realized right now. That’s if you have $899 to spare, and that’s the sale price. Hasbro’s robotic Megatron will be available to buy for its pre-sale price for 30 days after which time it will go up to its regular $1,199 price tag.

That might sound like a lot for a Transformers collectible, but if it isn’t already clear, this is a heck of a lot more than any Megatron merch you already own. It has taken the team at Robosen three years to make this Megatron a reality. Equipped with 112 ultra-bright LEDs and 36 motors, this Decpticon bot really is the closest to the real thing that is ever going to exist, and it’s something we can actually own if we’ve got the money to buy one.

Joining Robosen and Hasbro’s impressive collection of Transformers robot is its first Decepticon – Megatron. This Megatron bot can transform between its bipedal and tank form through its companion app or when told to via voice command, comes equipped with weapons in either form, and has 270 unique voice lines recorded especially for it by the original voice of Megatron.

The Megatron comes with an energon sword and energon mace, so one devastating weapon in each hand, and tank shell projectiles that can be fired when the Decepticon is in its tank form. If a 21-inch tall Megatron wielding a mace or a tank firing stuff at you isn’t enough to intimidate your enemies, maybe the robot being able to speak will get the job done. Frank Welker, the actor who first voiced Megatron in 1984, returned to the booth and recorded more than 270 unique lines for this auto-converting Decepticon. Welker has also signed the chest plate of 40 Megatron bots, but you won’t know if you’ve got a signed one until yours arrives.

Megatron is the fourth Transformer to have been turned into one of these incredibly special robots. The Decepticon joins Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Grimlock who already have robots of their own. Although he’s the first Decepticon, Megatron’s arrival levels things up for the bad guys, likely siding with Grimlock to take on Optimus and Bumblebee. I wouldn’t recommend actually having them all fight each other, although if you do, just promise me you’ll record it and post the results online for the rest of us.
