UK Drafting AI Regulations; OpenAI Opens Tokyo Office; Adobe Working on Generative Video AI

On today’s news digest: UK Drafting AI Regulations; OpenAI Opens Tokyo Office; Adobe Working on Generative Video AI

Following in the footsteps of the EU earlier this year, the UK has started drafting regulations for the most powerful AI models. Policy officials at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology have begun the process of devising legislation which aims to limit potential harms caused by AI. No bill is imminent just yet. Reportedly, the government is likely to wait until the AI conference due to be hosted by France later this year or early next year to open a consultation on the topic. Meanwhile, officials of the technology department and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have suggested amending UK copyright laws in order to allow companies and individuals to opt out of allowing language models to use their content.

With the objective of further global expansion, OpenAI has opened a new office in Tokyo. This Japan office marks the company’s first in the APAC region. The leader in AI said its Tokyo office would bring it closer to enterprise clients, including Toyota and Rakuten, both of which are using its products to automate complex business processes. Tadao Nagasaki, former president of Amazon’s Web Services’ Japan arm, has been named OpenAI’s new Japan president. On Monday, a new Japanese-language version of ChatGPT was also announced.

More in the AI ambit: Adobe is working on its own generative video model. The tool will create footage from scratch, guided by either text prompts or reference images. Users will also have access to three new features: object addition, object removal, and generative extend. The model will form part of the company’s expanding Firefly family of generative AI products. Adobe reports that the video editing suite will be made available through Premiere Pro sometime later this year.
