UNESCO and LG AI to Develop a Global Massive Open Online Course on Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

UNESCO and LG AI Research are collaboratively developing a global Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the aim to champion the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies. The announcement was made during a signing ceremony on the sidelines of the AI Seoul Summit on 22 May 2024.

The Ethics of AI MOOC, based on the Global Recommendation on the Ethics of AI adopted by all UNESCO Member States in 2021, will provide comprehensive educational materials and foster capacity-building initiatives. This course is designed to equip AI practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and advocates with the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the ethical landscape of AI, addressing crucial topics such as bias mitigation, privacy safeguards, transparency, and human oversight.

Key figures at the signing of the partnership included Dr. Kyunghoon Bae, President of LG AI Research, and Ms. Soohyun Kim, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok.

Dr. Kyunghoon Bae expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Aligning with our vision of improving lives through AI, this partnership with UNESCO, a leader in global AI ethics policy and discourse, is highly significant. We look forward to fruitful outcomes through collaboration across businesses, international organizations, academia, and civil society to ensure AI’s responsible and trustworthy development within a framework of global trust.”

Ms. Soohyun Kim emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that, “this partnership is crucial in addressing the complexities of AI governance and ensuring its responsible and ethical development on a global scale. Together, we are cultivating a global community dedicated to ethical AI practices.”

The development of the Ethics of AI MOOC is not merely about creating a course but the cultivation of a global community of AI champions committed to ethical practices. This community will play a pivotal role in promoting the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies, fostering a culture of ethical innovation that transcends geographical and sectoral boundaries.

As the world continues to grapple with the rapid advancements in AI, the partnership between UNESCO and LG AI Research demonstrates our shared commitment to ensuring that AI serves as a force for positive change, advancing both humanity and sustainable development.
