VW Teases $21,000 Entry-Level EV For 2027
Volkswagen is gearing up to launch an affordable EV in Europe and a debut is slated for 2027

One of the biggest hurdles facing electric vehicle adoption is high prices. However, help is on the way as Volkswagen is gearing up to launch an entry-level EV that will be priced from €20,000 ($21,729 / £17,020 at current exchange rates).
Volkswagen is keeping details under wraps, but said their Board of Management has signed off on the entry-level electric mobility project and a debut is slated for 2027. The company added they’ve been “working for some time to offer compact, particularly inexpensive electric vehicles in the price range of around 20,000 euros ($21,729 / £17,020).”

The EV is being created for Europe and the teaser image shows a futuristic hatchback that resembles a cross between the ID.3 and e-Up. While there isn’t much to see, the model has a rounded front fascia and a curved windscreen that flows into a gently sloping roof. They’re joined by rounded wheel arches and a wavy rear end.
That’s not much to go on, but Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume said, “Generations of people associate the strong brands of the Volkswagen Group with their first car – and with affordable mobility. As a group with strong brands, we continue to assume this social responsibility to this day. That’s why I’m very pleased that we’re launching a future-oriented project. It’s about entry-level electric mobility from Europe for Europe.”
His sentiments were echoed by VW brand CEO Thomas Schäfer, who said “In order for electromobility to become widespread, attractive vehicles are needed, especially in the entry-level segment. Our brand promise is: electromobility for all.” He added that “Despite the attractive price, our electric cars will set standards in the entry-level segment in terms of technology, design, quality, and customer experience.”
We can expect to learn more closer to launch, but Volkswagen is already developing an “Electric Urban Car Family” that was previewed by the ID.2all concept and will arrive by the end of 2025. The lineup is slated to consist of a compact Volkswagen car and crossover as well as a Skoda SUV and Cupra car. All four models will be built in Spain and at least some of them are slated to cost under €25,000 ($27,150 / £21,277).
