Following last year’s mass move to the cloud, enterprises across EMEA are now bedding down and securing their cloud architecture and implementing best practice to help future proof their infrastructure.

This is according to Werner Vorster, country manager, sub-Saharan Africa at Rubrik, and Nicolas Groh, field CTO EMEA at Rubrik, who were speaking ahead of a webinar to be hosted by Rubrik, in partnership with ITWeb, this month.

Groh says organisations across EMEA had to move quickly to the cloud during the early months of the pandemic last year. “In 2021 it will be about bedding down their new architecture and securing all that. Most companies foresee further lockdowns, and CTOs are now working to ensure that their infrastructures are prepared for any eventuality,” he says.

Says Vorster: “In South Africa, we are definitely seeing a massive increase in public cloud adoption. Throughout the early months of the pandemic, companies saw a need to rely less on tape backups hosted in data centres; because during hard lockdowns they couldn’t go in to their premises to change tapes daily. Many organisations are now eliminating tape, which is old, clunky and slow to restore from, and looking at public cloud for archiving. Every company in South Africa is now somewhere in their cloud journey, although few are all-in on cloud yet.”

A key challenge in this journey is what Vorster describes as ‘noise’ – complexities in architecting, managing and securing the environment. “Companies are looking to simplify the processes of offloading data into the cloud, instantiating that and converting it into cloud native applications,” he says.

I foresee containers and Kubernetes being the big trigger for 2021 as organisations seek to go into the cloud and back in the easiest way possible.

Groh says that hybrid cloud and adaptability will be key focus areas in the months ahead: “Therefore, I foresee containers and Kubernetes being the big trigger for 2021 as organisations seek to go into the cloud and back in the easiest way possible.”

Rubrik’s webinar on Secure cloud migration: Unlocking the cloud with future proof architecture, will explore best practice approaches to cloud migration for DR and testing, and the keys to cloud out, cloud on, and cloud native protection.

Says Groh: “There’s not only one route to the cloud. We will discuss various methodologies such as lift and shift; or born in the cloud. We will also outline the learnings of a customer who has managed to make the transition from full data centre, to hybrid, to cloud, and who closed their data centres last week.”

The webinar will also outline Rubrik’s solutions for disaster recovery to the cloud, migrating test/dev to the cloud, cloud-native backup, and data archiving and replication. For more information, and to register for this event, click here.
