What We Know So Far
Overview
Don’t let the familiar name confuse you; the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S is an entirely new animal with an electric powertrain. Jeep’s first battery-electric vehicle (BEV), the Wagoneer S packs 600 horsepower via a pair of motors, has a claimed range of over 300 miles, and a quoted 60 mph time of 3.4 seconds. Yet it doesn’t ignore the brand’s legacy, including a fully modern interpretation of the seven-slot grille, albeit incorporated into a more aerodynamic overall profile; in fact, the Wagoneer S has a 0.29 coefficient of drag, making it the slickest Jeep design yet. Helping the cause are a unique dual rear roof/liftgate spoiler setup and its comparatively diminutive overall dimensions. It’s smaller in most measurements than the current mid-size Grand Cherokee, let alone the full-size Wagoneer. But there’s still room for five inside, along with 45.0-inches of overall screen area in front to handle all the instrument and infotainment any driver and passenger could ask for. Standard all-wheel drive and a variety of drive modes keep things Jeep-y, and 400-volt architecture provides the ability to charge from 20-80 percent in 23 minutes with a DC fast charger. We expect the Wagoneer S EV to hit dealer showrooms in the fall of 2024.
What’s New for 2024?
The first electric model from Jeep, the 2024 Wagoneer S represents a new beginning for the brand. A Wagoneer in name only, it’s an entirely new vehicle based on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform that is slated to underpin most of the brand’s forthcoming EV models.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S starts at $71,995.
The 2024 Wagoneer S EV hits showrooms in the well-equipped Launch Edition trim. Standard features include all-wheel drive, a panoramic sunroof, 20-inch wheels, an illuminated seven-slot grille, a McIntosh audio, and plenty of tech, including 45-inches of useable infotainment screen. We expect lower-priced models to join the lineup later on, but we don’t have any details on those yet.
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S utilizes a pair of electric motors, with one drive unit mounted in the front and another in the rear. They have a combined output of 600 hp and 617 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard, and the front electric motor features a disconnect function to reduce electricity consumption and increase range. Performance is lively, and Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction management system provides five distinct driving modes: Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, Sand. Jeep says the Wagoneer’s torsional rigidity is 35 percent stiffer than “previous midsize-segment Jeep brand SUVs,” which we assume means the previous-gen Grand Cherokee, and provides a superior ride, handling, and response to driver input. We’ll hold off on making any final judgments until we get behind the wheel.
0–60-MPH Times
Jeep claims a 3.4-second sprint to 60 mph and a top speed of 124 mph. For comparison, the 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid requires 5.3-seconds to hit 60 mph.
Towing and Payload Capacity
The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S EV is rated to tow a maximum of 3400 pounds. That’s significantly less than the 6000-pound rating for the 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid and the 6200-pound rating for the regular Grand Cherokee. The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV RS with rear-wheel drive is rated at 3500 pounds.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
Jeep claims the Wagoneer S will have a range of “over 300 miles.” Its 100.5-kWh battery (likely with 93.9 kWh of usable capacity) lithium-ion battery uses a 400-volt electric architecture and is capable of charging from 20 to 80 percent in a claimed 23 minutes on a DC fast charger. Level 2 charging on a 240-volt circuit should take the battery from 5 to 80% in nearly 7 hours. Drivers with no other resort than to plug in on a typical 110-volt household circuit best pack a book or three, as the estimate for the 5-80 percent charge in that scenario is up to 53 hours.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
The EPA hasn’t weighed in with an official figure yet, but Jeep is claiming up to 99 MPGe in combined driving.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Though the Wagoneer S is considerably smaller than the current gas-powered Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, it borrows many of those models’ trademark design cues inside. A twin-spoke, flat-bottomed wheel with red accent stitching utilizes a new anti-microbial vinyl wrap, heated and cooled seats front and rear with faux-leather upholstery are standard, and a blend of materials including decorative metal appliques are used to highlight the cabin. The Wagoneer S also marks the debut of electronic door releases for the Jeep brand. Front legroom measures 41.3 inches, the same as the Grand Cherokee; the second row doesn’t fare as well, offering 30 inches to the GC’s 31.8 inches. The Wagoneer S has a small 3 cubic-foot frunk, and there’s 30 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row and 61 cubes with it folded, both smaller than the Grand Cherokee’s cargo hold.
Infotainment and Connectivity
A standard set of screens totaling 45.0 inches of total display space headlines the infotainment system. It’s comprised of a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 10.3-inch passenger screen with HDMI connectivity, and the center infotainment screen. A 10.0-inch heads-up display is also standard, as are a 10.3-inch deployable lower climate control display, and ambient interior illumination with 64 available colors.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Wagoneer S features a host of standard safety and assistance features including adaptive cruise with stopping, lane keeping assistance, a 360-degree surround camera, and parking assist to name a few.
