WWDC 2024: New OS upgrades, generative AI and everything you can expect

With each passing day, anticipation around Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference- WWDC is growing. Tech enthusiasts are eagerly waiting to see what Apple has packed this year in terms of new software, devices, and other services. Scheduled between June 10-14, WWDC 2024 is said to lean heavily on a focus on software updates, with Apple foraying into Artificial Intelligence (AI).

From iOS 18, new MacOS to AI features, here is a breakdown of what we are expecting from WWDC 2024.

Apple to Step into the AI Race

One of the biggest excitements this year is Apple’s step into the AI race. Unlike Google, Meta, and Samsung, Apple seems to be a bit lagging behind in announcing new AI features. However, with WWDC 2024, Apple is expected to finally unveil its AI capabilities, starting with the AI feature-packed iOS 18. Apple has been diligently building its AI capabilities, and this event might be the platform to unveil its plans. We might see the introduction of “GenAI” features integrated directly into iPhones and a major overhaul of iOS 18 built around AI functionalities.

iOS 18: The Biggest iPhone Upgrade Yet

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that iOS 18 will be the most significant iPhone upgrade ever. He suggests Apple will integrate AI across the operating system, impacting everything from music playlist creation to developer coding. Siri is also expected to receive a major upgrade, gaining natural conversation capabilities and enhanced personalisation through large language models.
Here are some additional features rumoured for iOS 18:

  • Smarter Siri: Improved conversation flow and personalisation through AI integration.
  • Enhanced Productivity Apps: AI-powered writing assistance in Pages, smarter slide creation in Keynote, and even AI-assisted coding in Xcode for developers.
  • Personalised Music: Auto-generated playlists based on user mood or preferences in Apple Music.
  • Revamped Home Screen: Increased customisation options, potentially allowing users to create blank spaces and arrange app icons more freely.
  • Improved Messaging: Integration of RCS messaging for seamless communication between iPhone and Android users.
  • Smarter Maps: Support for topographic maps and the ability to save custom routes in Apple Maps.

Apple to Announce macOS 15

While iOS takes the spotlight, macOS won’t be left behind. Many AI features introduced in iOS 18 are likely to find their way into macOS 15 as well. Apple is expected to continue its tradition of naming the new macOS version after a Californian landmark. Possibilities include Redwood, Sequoia, or Shasta.

More Updates for Other Apple Devices

Just like each year, the WWDC will likely showcase updates for other Apple devices, including watchOS 11, tvOS 18, HomePod Software 18, and even visionOS 2. However, specifics about these updates are still under wraps.

We Might See New Hardware Upgrades

While the focus is on software, WWDC 2024 might also introduce new hardware. We could see refreshed versions of Macs like the Mac Studio, Mac mini, or Mac Pro featuring the latest M3 chips.

Notably, while everything is just rumoured and nothing has been confirmed by Apple, yet considering the rumours and speculation, WWDC 2024 will definitely bring some much-anticipated updates.
